Amarula is a Marula fruit based cream liqueur from South Africa. The Marula tree is native to various areas throughout Africa and Madagascar. It is the wild tree, never cultivated by man. The Marula fruit is harvested by hand in the Limpopo region of South Africa by the local communities. The fruit is fermented, distilled and matured for two years in French Oak before being blended with the finest fresh diary cream. Amarula has the creamy texture typical of the Irish cream liqueurs but the cream used in Amarula is much lighter and the flavor is much more subtle with fruity vanilla/caramel notes instead of the strong notes of whisky. Amarula is best enjoyed neat and over ice.
